"North American continent" includes Canada as well as the USA, and, depending
upon what definition you use, as far south as the Panama Canal. Even in the
USA, some fields tagged as "football" are likely to be for sports other than
"American football", given our cultural diversity.

Well that hopefully would solve the rendering issue . But your previous stats

>football=3,848 (5M of data)
>association_football=3

lot of people have already tagged 'football' . "Some ball" will simply vanish .

Is there a bot which cleverly goes around and check the 'football' tag
in north american continent and replace with 'american_football'.

The most carefully to be dealt football tag would be places outside
north america who might have their own cultural representations where
"football" might/might not have meant football(en_GB)
