Looking at those images, it’s pretty clear to me that this is what you mean by “trail”.

And yet it’s a “formal”, sign posted, maintained, named trail: http://www.trailville.com/wiki/WI_Kettle_Moraine_State_Forest_Ice_Age_Trail
