Why not include a weblink to the "reason for the name"?
That could be a wikipedia-link to the page of the person the name comes from - or something else.

I would even say that it has nothing to do with a geographic database. OSM is NOT an encyclopedia. OSM is not a substitute of Wikipedia.

I think the intention was to record the specific words on the street-sign rather than general encyclopaedic information about the person who gave his name to the street. That could be legitimate for OSM, do you agree?
