The common use is for wine grapes.
However the Oxford English dictionary says "typically for the production
of wine" so it does not exclude table grape production from 'vineyards'.
The OSMwiki is presently not helpful .. not mentioning table grapes at all.

Graeme,
I am not sure about what bothers you precisely here, is it only the
term 'vineyard'?
According to Wikipedia I find it well suited.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vineyard
> A vineyard /ˈvɪnjərd/ is a plantation of grape-bearing vines, grown
mainly for winemaking, but also raisins, table grapes and
non-alcoholic grape juice.

I'd agree with you there Warin, the crop is what is being
harvested, not the trees themselves.
Another one I noticed on that page is
*crop*=grape <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:crop%3Dgrape>
Vineyards, probably better to use landuse
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:landuse>=vineyard
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:landuse%3Dvineyard> instead.
The person who made that entry possible isn't aware that grapes
can also be grown to eat, not just for making wine?
Thanks
Graeme
One statement is "prefer trees
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:trees>=coffee_plants
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:trees%3Dcoffee_plants&action=edit&redlink=1>"
.. that really goes against what the crop actually is. If
anything the crop is coffee_beans!
