Historic features should not be mapped in OSM: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Good_practice#Don.27t_map_historic_events_and_historic_features Therefore, an object which no longer exists can simply be deleted. The editing history is still stored in our database even after an object is deleted, so you don't need to worry about permanently losing data.
