> All the ones in my area are from the Tiger import and use zip_left or zip_right https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/tiger:zip_left
It ends up not being used by ordinary applications to determine the address of a spot, unless this data is also in another feature in the tag postal_code=*. > are we going to split roads even for changing post codes along them? From my understanding, post codes are related to addresses, so the natural thing is to add them to addresses, roads don?t have addresses around here so I wouldn?t add post code information to them. Postal codes in Brazil, locally "CEP", works this way: Towns/Villages < 50k residents have a CEP for the whole territory. Towns/Cities > 50k residents have a CEP registered for each road. Sometimes there is a CEP for each segment of the street, for each side of the street, or both situations as the example in my city. Example: Logradouro/Nome (street name) ;Bairro/Distrito (suburb) ;Localidade/UF (City) ;CEP (Postal Code) Rua do Acampamento - até 288 - lado par;Centro;Santa Maria/RS;97050-000 Rua do Acampamento - até 289 - lado ímpar;Centro;Santa Maria/RS;97050-001 Rua do Acampamento - de 290 ao fim - lado par;Centro;Santa Maria/RS;97050-002 Rua do Acampamento - de 291 ao fim - lado ímpar;Centro;Santa Maria/RS;97050-003 There are cases where streets are the boundaries and consequently each side has a CEP, but as the examples above, each side has a different postal_code precisely because CEP are tied to streets. > Could you do it like with the names, postcode:right and postcode:left, if needs be? Yes, if it is possible to find the side of the street the postal_code refers to. We need an information to be already mapped (house numbers) to complement with postal_code when they are divided by each side of a street. When addresses will be all mapped, postal_code:[left/right]=* will work in every situation. However, with missing pieces in this puzzle, we often have information to be inserted into OSM, but are unable to identify the correct side. For this reason, postal_code:side:[even/odd]=* has been used for some mapper, although it is not registered in the correct wiki page nor looks to be semantically correct. > Back in the day there were associatedStreet relations. For some reason they weren't liked, to state it mildly, but that's where I added the postal code for these different sides + the houses. That's an interesting approach. It hasn't been liked in Brazil either. > consider mapping either postal code areas instead, it's what we've done in Germany (and the two area relations will then both include that road as part of their boundary). As mentioned in other responses, these are cases of postal codes that are related to streets and not to places/areas. ---- How does it work to update the postal_code page to also acept and document postal_code:left and postal_code:right as acceptable? Is it the same process of creating a new tag and going through the voting process? Thanks
