You should check out Jeffrey Zeldman's book, *Designing with Web Standards*, in which he describes no maintenance ways to serve both CSS-capable and CSS-infirm user agents. For instance, he suggests putting more troublesome markup in a stylesheet incorporated using the @import command that is not recognized by 4.0 browsers. Many other good tips and a good education.
