Dear Francois: Thanks! Your explanation makes good sense. In order to make your fix work with util/base32, and to follow the advice that you quoted from Kumar McMillan, I will loosen the constraints of the util/base32 code to allow base32-encoded inputs to be unicode.
I would prefer to have the constraint be more specific, and to allow *only* unicode and not str as the inputs to base32, but that seems like more trouble than it is worth at this point.
