Okay I reported this to the Ubuntu maintainers of firefox via launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/382444 # short read
from server results in cached page with the first few bytes overwritten by
the short read result
Closing this ticket as 'invalid'.
