Just a nitpick, but aren't both of these actually "forward compatibility"
issues?

Forward compatibility:
ensuring that current code will not be broken by anticipated future changes

Backward compatibility:
ensuring that a change does not break expectations of old code
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backward_compatibility>
