oh, also, in the python assertion, use {{{tmp=self.seconds()}}} and do
your checks on tmp. If things are this weird, we should suspect the
stringification routines too, so print tmp several times and make sure it
holds still. (i.e. if there were a bug in float-to-string, could that
manifest as the same symptoms?)
