Folks: On 2009-07-20 I thought that Tahoe-LAFS v1.5.0 was ready to roll [1], but then Brian added a ticket into the v1.5.0 Milestone about being able to apt-get the pycryptopp and zfec dependencies and any other dependencies (ticket #769). Then, while we were working on that, I realized that nobody had actually manually tested the install.html process on Windows in a while, and I put out a call for volunteers, and several people stepped up, and sure enough there were several issues with installing Windows, which we have now mostly fixed and/or documented on the mailing list and the trac ticket, but not yet as a user-facing doc on the wiki (ticket #773).
It just now turned out that Brian isn't going to have time to fix the allmydata.org-hosted apt repositories until next Tuesday or Wednesday (see his comment on ticket #769). I don't think that I can wait that long to announce Tahoe-LAFS v1.5.0! Let's announce its existence, and people who want to try it can follow the install.html process [2], and then we can continue to improve the issues in these tickets (neither of which actually require any changes to the Tahoe-LAFS source code itself). If this is not horribly objectionable to anyone, then I'll plan to finish the relnotes.txt (i.e. the "press release") and send it out far and wide this coming Saturday, the 1st of August. I'll also update http://allmydata.org/trac/tahoe/wiki/DownloadDebianPackages to explain that the current release can't be apt-get installed. In the meantime, if anybody else knows how to build an apt repository (possibly by using Ubuntu PPAs?), please let us know -- our buildbots are providing all the .deb packages that we need (I think) -- we just need an apt repository to serve them.
