Zandr Milewski suggested implementing ECDSA. That would be good, but I expect to have done it myself (especially if someone pair-programs with me on it hint hint) before GSoC 2010 starts. (Technically, May 24: http://socghop.appspot.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2010/timeline .)
But that reminds me of another interesting self-contained project: Javascript Crypto! The project would be to get all the crypto pieces we would need to implement Tahoe-LAFS in Javascript, ideally by copying/reusing existing Open Source, Free Software Javascript crypto libraries (see http://testgrid.allmydata.org:3567/uri/URI:DIR2-RO:j74uhg25nwdpjpacl6rkat2yhm:kav7ijeft5h7r7rxdp5bgtlt3viv32yabqajkrdykozia5544jqa/wiki.html#[[quick%20reference%20guide%20to%20JavaScript%20crypto%20libraries]] ), but in order to support Tahoe-LAFS you would probably also need to add some new crypto algorithms such as ECDSA.
