Filenames are not globally unique in Tahoe-LAFS. This is a misunderstanding that I've heard before. Let me see if I can explain it better, and once I (or someone) hammers out a good explanation then let's add it to the FAQ.
I am using the terminology of a fellow called Zooko, of whom you may have heard:
In general, an object has three names: One of which globally unique, but if globally unique, human readability fails to scale, therefore it gets supplemented by two other names, one of which, the petname, is local, human readable, and locally unique, and another of which, the nickname, is global and human readable, but not globally unique.
