For your usecase, i would rather use Debian Live and store the data in an encrypted USB stick

I have thought of that as I'm going to use a external drive to store the Monero blockchain.

as you don't seem to need the specific thing Tails offers: enforcing the use of the Tor network.

Actually I do need to Tor for my Monero transactions as I have used Tails for storing different crypto and using wallets with Tor is crucial for me. I was just concerned about doing a 80GB download of the Monero blockchain over Tor in the sense that not only would take a long time but also I was under the impression large downloads and torrenting is hard on the network especially when I'm not giving bandwidth back.

If you want to go the Tails way, you may use a fresh Tails with no persistence, disable the firewall, do your download, save it on another (encrypted) USB stick and reinstall Tails.

Ok, maybe I should use a Tails DVD-R since I have a cd drive in my laptop. So that disabling the firewall will be on a read only media. Heres a good question will I be limited on my RAM which is 16GB and not be able to download to the external drive completely or is it only when downloading directly to the Tails operating system that your limited on space aka how much RAM you have?

to be able to disable the firewall, and quite some knowledge in linux network management

Yes I'm familiar with iptables commands not nftables.
