The medium was `dd`'d from a Mac, per:
https://tails.boum.org/doc/first_steps/installation/manual/mac/index.en.html

The change I needed to make comes from Reddit, per:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tails/comments/2mn0yx/acer_c720_chromebook_fails_to_boot_beyond_tails/

SOLUTION: Okay, so I found a solution that is 100% working for
me. When Tails boot
menu appears, I click TAB to modify the tags in this way: remove
the '2' from 'vmlinuz2'
and 'initrd2.img', then hit 'enter' and voilà!

Oh no, old laptops...
