Is the path "underground", so could you use layer=-1? If not, then layer=0 sounds good to me.

So it is not a tunnel, nor under a bridge...

Conceptually I view 'layer 0' as ground surface .. but in this location/cross section there are 3 'layer 0's - the top of the cliff, the path and the 'roof' of the path. I think under KISS principles .. layer 0 will do.
