To add the bridge, the way will need to be split at both ends of the bridge, and the appropriate bridge tags added to the bridge (bridge=yes (or bridge=boardwalk), and usually layer=1). There’s no way to add the bridge without splitting the way. See this example: https://www.openstreetmap.org/ way/1347517115 . Hope that helps.

Evening all,
Just seeking some guidance on tagging foot bridges on walking trails. I'm finding a few along the Great Ocean Road so I'm keen on getting this right. Here is my scenario. I'm stomping along an existing trail with existing tags (although I am adding a "name") and come across a foot bridge on the trail to cross a river or creek.
The bridge is not currently marked on the map.
I can't seem to find a way to tag a section of the way without splitting it
around the bridge.
Grateful for assistance and/or advice.

Ian
