As some of you may be aware, the Australian Government recently introduced E-Safety legislation, intended to keep children under 16 off social media (Yeah, we all know - good luck!)
One of our mappers has just sent me an article regarding this, and its possible effects on Wikipedia, which could possibly also affect OSM: https://www.crikey.com.au/2025/10/02/wikipedia-could-be-included-teen-social-media-ban/ And the “explanation” for each organisation to carry out their own self-assessment: https://www.esafety.gov.au/about-us/industry-regulation/social-media-age-restrictions/assessment , and if you can read that, and make sense of it, then good on you! >From looking at it, I *think* we’d be OK?, but Sections 5, 6 and 7 worry me, when they use terms such as “primarily” & “significant”, especially when combined with said potential AU$50 million fine! I’ve since passed it on to the OSMF Board, who also *think* we’d be OK, but will be talking to Legals about it, getting them to do the self-assessment & if necessary, talk to the E-Safety people. They’ve also asked us to please keep an eye open for any further articles concerning groups similar to us & Wiki that could be impacted, so if you see any, please pass them onto me & I’ll flick them onwards. Also posted to Forum & Discord (& I think Discord Oceania, which is ~95% Australia) may be heading for a world of hurt?!) Thanks Graeme
