Hi, It seems i get a delay in the messages for some reason? Anyway, It was asked about Ottawa Maps, and the Newmarket area.
Here's what i recommend. 1: Use the Ibycus Topo which coveres these areas in great details. Img file from http://ibycus.com/ibycustopo/download/imgs/ using the geobase map http://www.geobase.ca/geobase/en/browse.do?produit=cded&decoupage=50k&map=canada to find the tile. (I can make an interactive map where it will automatcially download the latest Ibycus Topo tile from this map) .. if anyone wants? ottawa http://ibycus.com/ibycustopo/download/imgs/10310700.img newmarket 2. Download the latest Computerteddy IMG file for the area. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download (at the bottom it explains how to find the tile) http://osm.ammit.de/osm/latest/img/63258856.img.gz 3. use both maps on the garmin on top of eachother. sendmap would work fine. :) 4: Pretend that all this data has already been imported onto t the OSM database (render=no) 5: When using the Ibycus topo on the garming GPS, along with what on OSM you will see some dublicates. So here the objective is to now work on the map, to show the extended detail, which is not on eithor maps. ... ie. trails/school names/ business, park names. .. stop lights, things like that. Answer: The reason is this. The Ibycus topo IMG file is created using GPSMapedit, and bringing in all the free government data.. and placing it on a new map. (not using OSM) . ... ideally it would be great if those polish format files where made available AND opensource.. so that anyone can go in there and edit it, and re-render the map to make an IMG file using cgpsmapper. ... But this is not how OpenStreetMap works. .. the base is a super huge totally empty 'space' where the roads and all the data is imported into it. ... So what we need todo is import all the free government data, Finally and happily :), the OSM foundation has agreed to use GeoBase data. ... the description is rather vague, however... the ASSUMPTION is that EVERYTHING from the Ibycus Topo CAN and will eventually get imported onto OpenStreetMap. The question is Exactly how much? ... and if the data can be cross referenced to the origional source. (a tag geobase=*) So.... this is why we cant directly import Ibycus Topo ... but can import the stuff from where he got the data from. If you want to see the ibycus topo on a smaller mapsource map u can use "mapsettoolkit". .. i am using http://www.gpssledmaps.com/guide/ as the author created an excellent tutorial to make the map installable. (there is a bug, in the ISS file thats produced (solution: add a slash in the directory source) ... right now i am working on creating smaller mapsets for Ibycus to host, so people can download just each province, instead of the whole thing. Anyway, This seems to be a great inturn solution... as the data that will get imported is EXACTLY THE SAME ... as what is shown on the ibcus topo... question is just how much? ... the source is the same. If this isn't clear, let me know. It would be great to have help in updating the wiki about this topic.
