I'd be interested in learning more details about this effort and the
tools available to contribute to this living map. Last year during the
OSGeo meeting in Vancouver, Peter Batty gave a recap of an OSM
conference he attended in Europe. (This was an unscheduled briefing
because the planned teleconference failed to work.) I'd really like to
have a more technical overview of the system at some point. I've read
various articles via Slashgeo, but it's still rather piecemeal in my head.
On a theoretical note, there is an interesting chapter in "Rethinking
Maps: New Frontiers in Cartographic Theory"
(http://www.routledge.com/books/Rethinking-Maps-isbn9780415461528) that
had some interesting thoughts on social mapping.

Where we (in Canada) have WMS layers / GeoTIFFs / Garmin Maps which
are all available to help local area mappers (and the data is in small

For this CanVec import, it's VERY important that for the area that
there are multiple mappers that the local community is involved. And

great way to keep track of who are the top mappers in each area.
(people who can get in contact with the local mappers, way faster than
I (or others) can, and have probably actually met many mappers in
person. You might have seen where i added in the National Protected
areas in the province?

There is now a growing group on the #osm-ca IRC chat.(on irc.oftc.net)
The main point of contact to reach the community is on the
[email protected] discussion list.
There hasn't been that many mapping parties lately, as there has been
alot of focus on the Canada Import.
I'm only able to attend if the mapping party is on a monday / tuesday
or a wednesday.

Here's a thought: how about, in the next 2 years, we hold a joint event
here in Canada, organized by OSM Canada and the Canada chapter of OSGeo
(http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Canada)? It would be a SoTM and FOSS4G
co-event (both events would keep their name, but would be at the same venue)
How's that for food for thought??!!!??!!!
