Does the trail follow exactly over the pipe in the ground? Probably not, it most likely follows the ROW, with deviations here and there, so I would be inclined to create a new way showing the trail. The pipeline shows up when you hit edit because the pipeline is in the database. You're just looking at a map rendering that doesn't display pipelines underground. I don't know of one that does personally, but it would be easy to create one.
