Groupspaces.com is free for groups up to 50 members.  Here in Fredericton we 
only have 20 members and the last two events I organized only had 2 or 3 
participants including myself.

I think Diane was referring to Meetup.com not being based on free open source 
software.

There are no usable alternatives at the moment, AFAIK, and GroupSpaces is not 
not free software either.
