It's doable, but something that we really need to get fixed at the source
if the issue is still present in CanVec.

True, hopefully someone working at NRCan is following this thread.

Of course, none of this CanVec work is a substitute for actually going out
and surveying the names in the slices!

Absolutely true, but given the distances, and the amount of time surveying takes, it might not be realistic. This proves that OSM really needs contributors in at least every city and major towns.
