I don't see that the main renderers (mapnik) and search engines
(nominatim) will handle Estonian street name abbreviations properly
any time soon.

Actually, nominatim has an abbreviation database that it automatically consults. But this mechanism assumes that the full long is in OSM and the user enters an abbreviation, not the other way around. So the current Estonian policy breaks it :(.

No abbreviations for other cases, e.g. person names

This is actually an interesting question in itself: "A. Laikmaa" as it is now or better "Ants Laikmaa" without abbreviation?

But this is just my opinion, always subject to re-open the
discussion.

I would definitely like to keep this discussion going. I still think there is a strong case for no abbreviations, internationally, including Estonia.
