Again, look at the disused=yes tag history (which share the same concept as ruins=yes). It exists around here (and in map features) since 21 April 2007, most people are complaining about it not rendered correctly (beside canals), people are fighting at creating bugs report, at osmarender, mapnik, mkgmap, cyclemap, etc. Don't you think people (14000 uses in the db !) using it are now bored and feel betrayed ?. Look at the answers from data use developers : This type of tagging is extremely unfriendly to data consumers (don't assume that all data consumers that don't care about your pet tag supports it), and in osmarender it would require really big and ugly stylesheet changes to support it and it's related tags.
