I think the main question is what is the postal address ?

Is it - 1 Magnolia Terrace, 43 Some Road, Durham

or is it - 1 Magnolia Terrace, Durham

In the first case the building name is just a fancy form of street number
and see other discussion of tagging street numbers.

Around me here in Edinburgh and also in Dumfries there are many examples of
streets with a block or maybe several blocks with a different name on one
side than the other. In every case I have seen the actual postal address is
the name of the block and not the road it lies on.

We need to be able to put the name in for route finding and to have it
rendered on the map so it can be seen for those who look at map to find
their destination rather than just rely on their Sat Nav.

I have tried a number of approaches
1. embedding another way under the through road. - does not render until
very highest zoom and you cannot tell which side of the road it applies to.
2. making another way so close to orig that it only resolves as seperate way
at very highest zoom - nearly works but difficult to judge and the recent
changes to osmarender handling of names causes many short ways to be
nameless.
3. Logging it by tagging as name_1 - not a lot of use as its neither
available for route finding or rendering.

Any previous discussion of the topic here has tended to be diverted by the
problems of names in different languages but that is a completely different
problem.

I suspect we need tags to name the Left and Right sides (looking along the
direction of the segment arrows) but leave it for those more acquainted with
the vaguaries of the rendering system to look into when they have time.

Cheers Dave

  Subject: [Talk-GB] Tagging building/terrace names that look like road
names.

  Hi
  Durham seems to have a lot of road signs on houses/walls. The road
actually has a name of it's own, though if you were half way down it you
could easily be mistaken for thinking the name on the house was the road
name (same sort of metal sign, standard letters, and city sheild).
  Is anyone tagging anything like this? I feel it should not be left out.
  But if I tag the part of the road it would be silly as it may be only 4
houses long. So then again, I don't want to exactly map every building, we
all know that would take longer than any one wants.

  On another note, I have some existing mapped roads with double names. (see
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=54.77099615903269&lon=-1.571026812970334&z
oom=17&layers=B0F then
http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=54.77136749034824&lon=-1.5701792351052082&;
zoom=17&layers=0BF )
  And they have the tag note="FIXME previously tagged segment" (automatic
from 0.5 upgrade?).
  So I sort of seen what's going on here, but how do I remove the
duplication nonsense in JOSM? Bearing in mind I didn't know how to edit a
segment under a way before, this question was bound to come up sometime.
