I noticed that there were only 5 counties tagged in the UK so I have uploaded a
fairly exhaustive set following mostly but not rigidly the ceremonial /
geographic counties [1]. Someone might like to further improve on them. You
can download the current set [4] and edit them in JOSM.

For my purposes, pyscho-geographic search criteria "pubs in Yorkshire" [2] and
for resolving is_in tags, [3] I am not too concerned about exact definitions
and boundaries, I just want as many names that people might search on with a
reasonable centre location.

However, for rendering it might be good to better distinguish between historic
counties (such as Huntingdonshire), ceremonial counties and current
administrative units ("unitary authorities"?). I know there a several folk on
this list that know a lot more about it than I. If anyone has any ideas or
pointers to earlier discussions I'd appreciate hearing them.

BTW, rendering of counties only seems to happen at zoom level 12 and only in
the Osmarender view [5].

I'd also like to be able to tag old and new borough and district names so that
people can search using things like Thanet and Aireborough. Anyone doing this?

Mike

[2] Where else can you get a decent pint? Yorkshire does not actually exist,
though 5 million Yorkshiremen may tell you otherwise.
