Hello everyone, The rendering on the Freemap site (www.free-map.org.uk) which aims to produce UK countryside maps from OSM data has altered in the light of recent discussions on footpath tagging.
There are now two layers on the rendering. The lower layer shows dashed black lines to indicate paths and larger dashed black lines to indicate tracks. Overlaid on this are transparent coloured lines to represent the different types of rights of way. So for example a track which is a public footpath has larged dashed black lines (to indicate the track) overlaid with a transparent green line (to indicate public footpath). Tracks known to be private (e.g. "PRIVATE - KEEP OUT" signs) are shown by the track (or path) symbol overlaid by transparent red. The rules I have used are: Public footpath: *either* designation=public_footpath *or* foot=designated, and horse NOT EQUAL TO designated. foot=yes is no longer accepted as a criterion for public footpath, this is due to extensive use of foot=yes for paths which are NOT public rights of way... Permissive footpath: much simpler, either foot=permissive and horse NOT permissive, or designation=permissive_footpath. Public bridleway: either designation=public_bridleway, *or* horse=designated. Will probably also add horse=yes here, as this does not seem to have the same problems that foot=yes has (i.e. people always use horse=yes for its intended purpose!) Byway: very simple: any of the following will match a byway: highway=byway; designation=byway; designation=public_byway; designation=restricted_byway; designation=unknown_byway (I've used this a few times when I didn't note first time whether it was a byway or restricted byway) Permissive bridleway: either horse=permissive, or designation=permissive_bridleway. Private tracks: access=private. Could also include foot=private AND horse=private, but have not done so yet. See http://www.free-map.org.uk. Try the Southampton or Portsmouth areas, or Fernhurst, West Sussex (enter "Fernhurst" in search box) for examples of rendering showing the two layers. Any comments on either the rendering or the tagging rules?
