It is considered that attribution requirement is met by this page:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Contributors
<http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Attribution>The source tag on data
items(ways, nodes) does help in allowing you to find which items were
copied/derived form OSSV(etc), but it is also very very helpful for other
mappers to know how a good outline of a lake is in OSM or why a road has a
wiggle that your GPS trace doesn't. If there is no source tag then you have
to assume the user had good data to work with (e.g. actual ground
surveying) or you have to contact them t clarify it.

It is often done that POIs can be placed based on the road network already
in OSM(helps for those without GPS). It's silly to put a source=self
(aligned to existing data) tag. But say you know a footpath goes around a
lake you could put "note=local knowledge and rough location, based on lake
position" which allows another mapper to come along and adjust the path
position because she got a good GPS track for the footpath.
With this in mind I would avoid changing the position of items to align with
OSSV, aerial imagery, or anything other than ground surveying. Seeing
things on the ground is our best way to be sure of how the object is and
that it is up to date. Unless of course you know a shop recently moved
location or a footpath has been closed and diverted.
