One word of caution here, not on usability of the data but of the accuracy. Many developers name their sites and even sometimes name the roads on a map before the naming authority (the LA normally) has issued the street name(s) to the developer. I think developers do this for marketing reasons. It's possible that in some cases the developer does get to select the street name but I know that here in Birmingham the LA picks the name from a pre-approved list.
I've mapped several new developments which appear to have a name like "The Oaks" (you get the idea) and sometimes even a temporary road name put up. I then later find that the final LA nameplate a few months later is entirely different. Here is one such example: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/26727752/history Cheers Andy > -----Original Message----- > From: Donald Noble [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: 30 September 2012 10:59 > To: [email protected] > Subject: [Talk-GB] Acceptability of data sources for road names > > I would appreciate some opinions on acceptable data sources for road names > when out surveying, particularly thinking about new housing developments > here, but could apply elsewhere too. > > Of the six data sources below, the first and last are pretty black and white OK > and not OK respectively, but what about the shades of grey in between? > > 1.
