A number of potentially problematical edits to railways have been made in the Manchester and Leeds areas over the last day or so. It's by a new mapper who seems to be still feeling their way a bit and people local to those areas might want to check some of their edits.

For example in Leeds

http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/115570238/history
seems to have been replaced by
http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/244276591
on a slightly different alignment.

I can't comment on the alignment but the previous tagging seems more correct to me (that bit is definitely layer=1).

A number of their other edits seem to be removing abandoned railways. Notwithstanding the "if it's not a railway it shouldn't be on the map" argument, here's what looks to me from the imagery like a former railway bridge that is clearly visible in the Bing imagery:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/115567727/history <http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/115567727/history> http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit#map=18/53.79432/-1.55853 <http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit#map=18/53.79432/-1.55853>

Part of the M621 apparently now interescts with a railway:

They're a new mapper and I'm sure that all their edits have been made with the best of intentions, but if you've made edits to railways and in the vicinity of railways in the Leeds or Manchester areas you might want to check their current state. I did mention this to the DWG today (after an OSM message from me to the mapper concerned didn't seem to communicate the collaborative nature of the project), but since then they've popped up on IRC and a member of the DWG have replied suggesting that they'd prefer a community-led reponse to what's happened.

Cheers,

Andy
