The issue is not a grid ref itself as such, but the data tables that are necessary to do a fully accurate conversion between OSGB and WG84 (or any other coordinate system). There is a simplified algorithmic transformation but a fully accurate conversion requires the OSTN02 data. I'm not sure what the current status is but they certainly used to claim various IP rights over it.
