Freemap was of course one of the very first grassroots mapping sites (2004), together with my geowiki.com (2003 [1]), Jo and Schuyler's freemap.in (2005?), and OpenStreetMap itself (2004). We all converged on OSM sooner or later, but it's a worthwhile historical detail to remember the early days.
