Well, they wouldn't actually have been in the sea. Keep in mind too, that the Mapnik slippy map is only one manifestation of OSM. Garmin maps, Osmarender, Open Mapquest, the Cycle map, all of these have their own approach and might have perfectly fine coastline data. The good news, of course, is that erosion isn't so fast. Once we get the coastline pretty accurate it should stay with us for a good while.
