Hi All.

You might be aware that The Science Gallery's flagship exhibition this
summer is called Hack The City. There is an open call for exhibits /
events etc as part of the exhibition here:
http://www.sciencegallery.com/hackthecity

I took the liberty of emailing Teresa Dillion
([email protected]) who is curating the event, about
the possibility of running some OSM promotional activity / mapping
parties as part of the exhibition. My email, and Teresa's response is
below.

A couple of questions emerge from this. Firstly is this something that
we should engage with? Personally I think it would be a great
opportunity to promote OSM. If the answer is yes, will any of you
volunteer to help me put a submission together? The deadline is this
Friday, the 20th.

Regards,

Richard

# Hi Teresa,
#
# You might remember me, I took part in the OpenData Challenge as part of
# Jane Ruffino's team, and I had a very brief word with you in O'Neill's of
# Pearse St., just before Christmas, about the possibility of running an
# event as part of your upcoming Hack The City exhibition.

Yes, I rem - hello and happy 2012.

# By way of introduction I am a GeoData specialist and a member of the
# OpenStreetMap Foundation. At OpenStreetMap (OSM) we style ourselves as
# 'The Wikipedia of Maps' All of the data collected and produced by our
# 500,000+ members is licensed under Creative Commons and thus can be
# considered to be Open Data. You can see the map on
# http://www.openstreetmap.org/

I'm aware of openstreemaps

# One of the main ways we seek to expand the community of mappers, and the
# quality of the map, is by running events called 'Mapping Parties'. At
# these events members of the community talk about the project, including
# its aims and successes and we also show participants how to contribute to
# the map. At some point during the event we usually take participants out
# onto the streets to capture data, we then return to base to upload this
# data and have a beer or three, while answering questions and showing off
# further aspects of the project. The Irish OSM community is quite active
# and we could expect to have 10-15 long standing members of the community
# at any single event.

Ok.

# I think that running one or more Mapping Parties as part of the Hack The
# City dovetails nicely with your aims for the exhibition.

This could be interesting but how would you extend it. If regular
Mapping Parties take place anyway, what added value would there be in
having one during HTC - how would build on what you are already doing
- in terms of concept and numbers.

# There is also a possibility that we could show some visualisations
from the project, such
# as this video: http://vimeo.com/2598878 (a refresh of that video, for
# 2011, is expected in the coming months)

Ok - interesting video. I don't know if it exactly what we would have
in the exhibition but do include it in your proposal. It would be
important for us to know if you as a group have the 'rights' to show
this in a public exhibition and get the right permissions eg., from
ito!

# I also gave a talk centred on OSM
# at the recent Ignite Dublin 8 in The Science Gallery, my slide deck is
# here: http://www.geographic.ie/presentations/ignite-dublin-8-presentation/

I've checked - it would be nice to hear the story behind the images.

# If you this might be of interest, or want to discuss further please let me
# know. I am based in Dublin city centre and can usually meet at short
# notice if needed.

Unfortunately, its a really busy week this week, with final deadline
closing, plus I've started teaching. So my advise would be to submit a
formal application based on a Mapping Party workshop - the application
form and brief are online: http://sciencegallery.com/hackthecity

I'd also advise on adding something 'special' to your regular Mapping
Party workshop that adds to the HTC theme; e.g., pick some particular
area of the city and perhaps build some activities in that look at
different approaches to mapping, we'll be working with DCC on securing
some 'hack' areas for example, you could tie into this but I would
need some more 'meat' so to speak on the workshop idea - once you come
up with some ideas on this you can send them over and I can discuss
via email -

Hope this helps - Teresa
