Brian, Don't worry about only doing 5, its as much about the quality as the quantity.
Think of it this way, if you kept up with 5 each time you sat down to do these, and did 5 each day, with weekends off, in just over a year you would be finished all of Westmeath (55 weeks to be exact based on 1,376 townlands in Westmeath). The end result of your work over that period of time would be a full set of townland boundaries for Westmeath, upon which civil parishes, baronies, electoral districts, etc. could then be calculated and mapped and anyone who wants the data, can then use it for free and without having to pay for an extremely restrictive licence to the Ordance Survey, who are the only other source of this data. Summed up, every bit counts :) I took a look at your sheet and see you've added 10 points. I hope you don't mind me saying, but you really need 30-40 to ensure the sheet lines up correct to the imagery & Openstreetmap data, however, I also reviewed some of the OSM data under your sheet out of curiosity and some of it is very badly misaligned against the imagery, most likely due to being collected with GPS before we had imagery. It would be a good idea to realign it before using it to rectify your sheet any further otherwise you are rectifying against inaccurate data. As you do more townlands, you will also find that a significant amount of roads are also used as part of the boundaries so it is of benefit to have these all aligned correctly ahead of time, before getting to the townland mapping itself otherwise the boundaries may not be accurate. As for the sheet looking awful, I could not see any issue in terms of the quality of the sheet, so I am assuming you mean the alignment maybe? If I've misunderstood please feel free to say so. With regards to townlands with alternative names, alt_name would be appropriate, added in the relations window, similar to how all the other tags appear. For the "Part of.....", I'm honestly not sure, I have't come across it yet. There was a good discussion in the chatroom this evening between a few of us on the best route to take with this. I'm going to send a seperate mail out on it to gather more opinions on it. Once something is nailed down, I can add an additional video on this subject. You've raised 2 interesting issues here, between the alt_name and the "Part of..." , both of which I've never come across so both I haven't covered in the videos. Once I'm sure on the correct way to handle the "Part of..." issue, I'll add an 8.2 video to the series covering these 2 topics Thanks, Dave On Sun, Oct 12, 2014 at 7:12 PM, Dave Corley <[email protected]> wrote: > Brian, > > If you pop into the chatroom I can go through things with you now > > Click this link to open the chatroom in your browser - > https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.oftc.net/osm-ie > > Dave > > On Sun, Oct 12, 2014 at 7:07 PM, Brian Prangle <[email protected]> wrote: > >> Hi >> >> I've rectified my first sheet and added a whole FIVE townland boundaries. >> I >> can see that this is going to take some time.
