I just posted this feedback on the Dublin.ie Dublin City Community Maps project http://www.dublin.ie/maps/home.php
I like what you are trying to do here, but in my opinion you are using the > wrong platform. Building data on top of Google Maps is just handing over > data to a corporate entity to further their commercial product. If you want > to really help the community, then encourage the community to build their > own community map. I am a volunteer mapper for the OpenStreetProject. It is > an open source, open data alternative to Google Maps and the like. Think of > Wikipedia, except for maps. Currently our maps of Dublin are far more > detailed that what Google Maps offers. All data entered onto our maps is > done so by volunteers and anybody can contribute. > > All the data you are now adding to your custom Google Maps, that is only > benefiting your map and Google, could instead be added to the OpenStreetMap > and would benefit anyone that builds on the OpenStreetMap data. There are a > lot of both commercial and non commercial organisations out there using > OpenStreetMap data for free. I recently got a commitment from Transport for > Ireland that they will be considering using OpenStreetMap data in their > next contract for the Journey Planner service, see > https://twitter.com/TFIupdates/status/522318117520023552. > > Please engage with the OpenStreetMap Ireland community of volunteer > mappers and build a true community map.
