In an effort to produce printout of good quality map with data we collected during gillMapping, I was able produce .svg map using osmarender, that looks good on screen. See gill.png from:
http://gndec.ac.in/~hsrai/gillMapping/tmp/ or try gill.svg in Inkscape The pdf produced by printing from printing command of Inkscape, looks very bad, with few symbol very very large.
