Dear Andy, I was the first to suggest the possibility of adding the local names to the map, at the time of the "Google Maps secession" ( http://daily.wired.it/news/internet/2013/10/11/secessione-sardegna-google-maps-nomi-citta-paesi-546536.html). First I added the names of the municipalities in the name:sc tag to make a custom rendering (tried with maperitive), then some time after people started changing to the double language version, and the situatiion was at piece until a new Victor Amadeus II, king of Sicily ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Amadeus_II_of_Sardinia), came and decreed to actually use the italian - I see this comparison more fit than applying immediately Godwin's Law,-,
I would have preferred to spend my time doing some other contributions, but now I see it's time to make 'our' map somewhere else (actually it's another rendering, but I need to setup again the vector tiles toolchain I broke, meh).
