Hi Grant,
Yes I can help + host.
Do you know if the source files have the co-ordinates added? How many
files? How many gigabytes? What format (Geo)TIFF?

Process used for agri.openstreetmap and OOC beta etc...
  1) Add co-ordinates to source files (if missing)
  2) Trim to only map area (depending on source)
  3) Re-project (optional)
  4) Upload to server (faffy.openstreetmap.org)
  5) Add files to mapserver + create config (me)
  6) Tiles!

Best to discuss in #osm-dev on irc. http://irc.osm.org/
I am Firefishy on irc. I am available UK day and some evenings.

This set is the Swedish topographic map, also known as
"Generalstabens karta", scale 1:100,000 for southern Sweden and
1:200,000 for the northern half of the country. The printed
sheets have been scanned in 600 dpi colour, and are available
both as TIFF (~700 MB each) and JPEG (~17 MB). In addition, KMZ
files are available, for viewing with Google Earth, so I guess
some coordinates are already available. Edges need to be cropped
away. (The printed longitudes are based at the Stockholm
Observatory, 18° 3′ 34″ east of Greenwich.)

Northern Sweden,

If you click the name of the map sheet, a Flash-based
"zoomify" web application is started. The map names for
southern Sweden start with numbers 5, 6, 40, 41, ... so
the set is not complete. Let's do what we can. Just a single
sheet would be great as a demonstrator.

SUB.su.se is the Stockholm University library, and the contact
at their mapping department is Torsten Håkansson. When I
asked him, he said he thought someone from OSM was in touch
some years ago, but they backed out because of some strange
U.S. copyright law. I have not heard of that, so I will ignore it.
He also said they were looking at http://project.oldmapsonline.org/
so that's our competition.

I met Steve Coast at SOTM 2007 in Manchester, and I also know
Mike Collinson (former OSMF secreatary) from Stockholm.
