Hello. There exists some different renderings of osm-data in the area for hiking. Somebody else might know of a better rendering? Creating a .osm-file is not hard, just download the area in an application like JOSM and save it. I could help you with that if you are new to OpenStreetMap. How hard it is to convert to use on a garmin device I do not know but I belive it's possible. (someone else on this maillist wrote something about that a while back.. dont remeber who..). I dont know what you know about OSM but it's a project/community to collect map-data over the world. In the area you mentioned we would love gpx-traces I belive to be able to make the maps more accurate, so I you can log your hike with a GPS-unit of some kind we as a community would be thanckfull I think (I would like it anyway :) ).
