Sorry I was not on line when this was being discussed - but Peter gave me
the lead to contribute.

"Indicator" is supposed to be a short qualifier of the commonname that
creates a uniqueness to the stop point name. There is a list of approved
abbreviations (maybe incomplete from what Peter has said) - but from
experience there is also a provisional list of "preferred indicators" that
are about to be promoted nationwide (this is expected to be extended in the
light of experience). I attach that list for information ... they are
reasonably well adhered to already in the SE, EM and EA regions - but not
necessarily so well used elsewhere at present (some regions are much better
than others - it rather depends how much legacy data was permitted to get
into NaPTAN when it was first created). I am under no illusions about the
fact that indicators are not good at many stops now - and it will take years
before adherence to the principle of them being a short qualifier of the
common name is fully adhered to.

As for before and beyond, they are not words that currently appear in the
list at present - but I can see that they might be useful additions --- but
NOT bey and bef which are not abbreviations which are in common usage
anywhere!

Roger

You can read about about the NaPTAN standard [1] however the list of
preferred values for indicator in table 3.12 (page 54) don't match
very well with what I see being used and doesn't contain Before and
Beyond. For example 'adj' is missing from the list which is frequently
used for 'adjacent'.

Do be aware that the use of the indicator field is still being refined
and not everything that is in the current database is good practice.

Possibly Roger (Slevin) or Peter (Stoner) will be able to give us some
more detail on this.

NaPTAN preferred indicators

"stop"
"stance"
"stand"
"bay"
"opposite"
"opp"
"outside"
"o/s"
"adjacent"
"adj"
"near"
"nr"
"behind"
"inside"
"drt"
"entrance"
"main entrance"
"side entrance"
"front entrance"
"back entrance"
"north entrance"
"east entrance"
"south entrance"
"west entrance"
"arrivals"
"depatures"
"in"
"N-bound"
"Northbound"
"S-bound"
"Southbound"
"E-bound"
"Eastbound"
"W-bound"
"Westbound"
"NE-bound"
"NW-bound"
"SW-bound"
"SE-bound"

The words stop, stand, stance, bay can be followed by an alphameric string to
allow for stop codes – A, 1, A1, 1A, 23, FG etc ... we limit the numeric part
to 99 and the alpha to two characters either before or after the numeric.

Words which indicate a relationship (nr, opp, o/s, adj, etc) can be followed by
an alphameric string to allow for house numbers – 3, 27A etc. In this case the
numeric component has to allow for values to 9999, with or without a single
following alpha character.
