Reviewing the San Francisco data a little more has made me think about the modelling of stations in GTFS.

At the Market St/8th Street junction there are buses, a surface tram and a underground metro.

The GTFS feed has the following details for stops and services from them:

Metro Civic Center Station/Downtn: L, J, N, S, K, T
Metro Civic Center Station/Outbd): L, J, N, S, K, T

Also some surface stops

A 'Market St & 8th St' with: L-OWL, N-OWL, K-OWL, T-OWL, M-OWL, F, 6, 9, 9L, 21, 71, 71L A 'Market St & Hyde St' with: L-OWL, N-OWL, K-OWL, T-OWL, M-OWL, F, 6, 9, 9L, 71, 71L
A 'Market St & Hyde St' with: 19, 21
And an '8th St & Market St' with: 19

I would suggest that the first two are being treated as metro platforms and that the rest are surface bus stops/tram stops. As such it would be neat if the name of the metro platforms matched the platform names not the station with a suffix.

According to osm there are four entrances.

I note that Google Maps shows only two features, a metro station listing 'Light rail from this station' (which includes the F which is actual a surface route) and a single bus stop feature listing everything else. This is not a bad representation but given the level of detail on google maps with its building outlines and land parcels it would be good to be able to model public transit in more detail. That detail could either be in GTFS or in osm or both.

I would suggest that GTFS includes a feature called 'station entrance' to complete the model and that the standard recommends that stops are created for each platform.

I note that the osm data has the four station entrances (which do not currently render) but not the station itself or the platforms. There is a route relation for bus service 7 on Market St but there isn't a 7 in GTFS and there are no route relations for the other services, ie 6,L,21 etc.

All in all we are still in a bit of a muddle!

Personally I think osm should concentrate on the physical infrastructure in osm and that GTFS should ensure there is a stable ID to connect the Stops into this physical osm model and hold all the service details.

Google will no doubt sort out their own physical models or start using osm ;)

I wonder if http://www.öpnvkarte.de could work directly from GTFS.

Regards,

Peter
