I got this email in response to one that I had sent. It has to do with GTFS data that we could possibly use in OSM. As you can see, the company responsible for creating the data is supportive of the idea, but noted that it is up to the individual transit providers to license the data. Tell me what you think.
And I know that OSM isn't a "Wikipedia for mapping", but the differences probably aren't significant to people not involved directly with both. -Alexander ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Re: OpenStreetMap Date: Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 10:29:45 From: Aaron Antrim <[email protected]> To: Alexander Jones <[email protected]> CC: Keith Martin <[email protected]> Hi Alexander, Thank you for your email. Trillium does not have rights to license Yuba- Sutter Transit GTFS data. Those rights are for the Yuba-Sutter Transit to assign. The agency has chosen to make their data public, however without a license: http://www.gtfs-data-exchange.com/agency/yuba-sutter-transit/ I'd encourage the data to be integrated with OSM. Trillium works for many other public transit agencies, most of which have public GTFS data. I'd be happy to encourage those agencies to integrated their data in OSM. Let me know how I can help make this happen. Competition, options, and open data are good for everyone. Think of as like a Wikipedia for mapping. I have been in contact with Yuba-Sutter Transit, about the possibility of using its/your bus stop data for the OSM project. The Transit Manager there told me to contact you about this. My question is: under what license would you be willing to license your data under? Allowable terms would be similar to Wikipedia, in that only freely- usable data is accepted for inclusion. This could be a huge opportunity for you, as big names such as FourSquare and Apple are making the switch to OpenStreetMap data. My contact email is happy5214 <at> gmail.com, and I am available anytime except for 1200 to 1900 Central Time, when I am actually sleeping. Thank you, Alexander Jones -----------------------------------------
