In my area I have some schools with both a node and an area. Most schools are just the node with the GNIS ID, but some have the school grounds mapped out as an area also.
I see that both Mapnik and Osmarender will render the name of the area, as well as the node point. So the schools with both an area and a node have duplicate names on the map. Based on that, it seems like the node doesn't serve any purpose. I don't want to map for the renderers. I can imagine it might be useful to have the node for a POI list or other uses, even if I don't know specifically what that might be at the moment. My personal inclination is to keep both, and see if we can fix the rendering to label only one.
