I agree with most of this.
One very useful thing I've found tho is the (off the top of my head)
tiger:name_type=aly
seems all the alley's got imported as highway=residential - at least in
my area - so the tiger tag is very useful for doing a JOSM search for
all alleyways and changing them to highway=service, service=alley. Once
I figured that out it saved me hours upon hours of work and provided a
marked improvement to several town maps in my area
