Greetings all,

I have been loosely following this thread. I use the tile end products of
OpenStreetMap and CycleMap. The software I am using also has only PNG
support.

But since I happened to take a moment and explore, and I found this:
http://store.usgs.gov/b2c_usgs/usgs/maplocator/%28ctype=areaDetails&xcm=r3st
andardpitrex_prd&carea=%24ROOT&layout=6_1_61_48&uiarea=2%29/.do

I use the same maps but as delivered from the Terra Server (or what was
depending on the current state). I would like this view in a slippy tile
format.

Does this imply that these maps might be available as tiles somewhere?

I did play briefly with the link below and ended up with errors. I am sure
it is my lack of understanding.

I also tried a few variations of this hoping for some success.
http://basemap.nationalmap.gov/ArcGIS/rest/services/TNM_Vector_Small/MapServ
er/tile/10/308/376.png

This was the usual response:
The image
"http://basemap.nationalmap.gov/ArcGIS/rest/services/TNM_Vector_Small/MapSer
ver/tile/10/308/376.jpg" cannot be displayed because it contains errors.

Thank you!

Best regards,
Fred

Subject: Re: [Talk-us] Slippymap for USGS topos?

The ArcGIS Server used by USGS requires very precisely formed WMS requests.
I haven't tried to get his to work in JOSM - just TileCache. I'll see if I
can work it out this weekend. Buy me a beer in Denver and I'll figured it
out then!

For now, a hint - Potlatch2 style tilecaches of some of these layers:

Has anyone gotten these links to work in JOSM? They look really
useful, but I have not been able to get JOSM to recognize them.

The USTopo products are not the "good old" 1:24K. Rather,
they are GeoPDFs generated out of The National Map layers (with one
exception).

You can get the classic scanned topos (Digital Raster
Graphics, DRGs) via WMS:

                [drg]

The orthoimagery layer is available via this
WMS (note: this is NAIP plus some higher resolution imagery):

The National Map is available via this WMS (Zoom levels

You can also grab small scale National Map tiles directly
(zoom 1-12):

http://basemap.nationalmap.gov/ArcGIS/rest/services/TNM_Vector_Small/MapServ
er/tile/$z/$y/$x

The WMS links are formatted for tilecache. I'm not sure what
format JOSM prefers, but you can probably infer it. Note that you need to
get the layer names (numbers) just right or you won't get a valid response
from the server. And don't try to use EPSG:900913 even though the
GetCapabilities says it works.

One final thing: Do not trace roads from The National Map!
Despite the normal license free status of USGS data, the roads in The
National Map are currently licensed from TeleAtlas.

Good old usgs topographic maps are copyright free:

<http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/faq.html>

And often a very useful reference when mapping,
particularly in remote areas.
                        I am aware of:
                        http://toposm.com/us/

But is there a way to get USGS topographic
slippymaps as a background in JSOM?
