It's important to remember that meetup.com is selling two services in one: their calendaring and organization software, and listing on their site which involves publicity with their substantial list of members for which they have both locations and interests. The first one is easy to reproduce, the second one is not, and is frankly more important for OSM groups getting started in an area where they want to find people interested.
