Funding will cover travel costs to Canada and a scholarship (amount will depend on candidate’s education and experience). The study intends to better understand the impact of mass imports on OSM contributors' motivation in different cultural contexts. Through an analysis of the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database, the candidate will explore the characteristics and impacts of mass data imports into OSM for different geographic locations in Europe and North America. The successful candidate will possess a background in Geography, Computer Sciences or equivalent, with the ability to program, manipulate databases (e.g. PostGIS), and be ideally familiar with OpenStreetMap. The candidate will spend four months at Memorial University of Newfoundland (Canada) and two months at the University College London (UK) in collaboration with an ongoing European COST ENERGIC network (see www.vgibox.eu).
